Who needs a monthly rental here?

People need longer rentals here for all sorts of reasons: temporary work near Eglin, a winter stay, a few weeks at the beach, or while their own car is being repaired. A “monthly” rental might mean 28, 30, or 31 days, depending on the company, so check the dates in the quote.

Compare weekly and monthly quotes

Four weekly rentals may cost less than a monthly package—or the mileage limit may make the package a better deal. Ask for both, and compare:

  • Ask for separate 28-day and 30-day prices.
  • Compare the same car class at VPS and a city branch.
  • Check how many miles are included and what extra miles cost.
  • Ask who handles maintenance or tire problems during a long rental.
  • Find out whether you’ll pay a fee if you return the car early.

Florida’s $2/day surcharge on longer rentals

The Florida Department of Revenue says the surcharge is $2 per day, or part of a day, for the first 30 days of a qualifying rental. So on a 45-day rental, it applies to the first 30 days. Peer-to-peer and car-sharing rentals may follow different rules, so check the terms for the option you’re considering.

Airport vs local for long stays

Picking up at VPS is easy when you arrive by plane. For a longer stay, a Fort Walton Beach branch may be more convenient. If you want to switch locations later, ask whether the company will charge a one-way fee and get the answer in writing. For example, Enterprise lists a branch at 99 Eglin Parkway NE, Suite 26.

Insurance for extended rentals

Your credit card’s rental coverage may only apply for a limited number of days, and the limit depends on the card. Auto policies vary too. Before turning down coverage at the counter, call your card provider or insurer and confirm that your policy covers the full rental period. We don’t sell insurance or review policies.

Practical tips

  • Take a photo of the odometer and fuel gauge whenever you switch cars.
  • Save toll and parking receipts if your employer reimburses them.
  • Ask whether you’ll be charged weekly or get one large card hold.
  • Need a truck or large van? Ask about age and insurance requirements early. See our guide for drivers under 25.
